As far as foil kites are concerned, prejudice can be removed by field experience of open minded riders, as the following review of various sized Flysurfer kites demonstrates. Lance of Kite Republic recently moved to Thailand known for light winds prevalence, compared to his native Australia. Since he didn't want the wind conditions cut his number of days on the water, and having heard of the reputation Flysurfer kites as the dominators of light winds, he naturally wanted to check for himself if their fame was deserved. Two or three days of tests in conditions varying from 5 to 30 knots convinced him not only they were unquestionably the best low wind kites on the planet, but to his utter surprise also fantastic and safe kites in nuking conditions. Many urban legends about ram air were busted in the process.

PS: in the meanwhile Lance has "flown" the Speed3 Deluxe 21; there will soon be an addition to this review.

Having been kiting for about 9 years now and working in the industry for about 7, I thought I had flown all there was to fly. After trying everything out there, I was happily riding Torch’s 7,10 & 14 meters. I had flown a different brand of ‘foils” several years earlier and didn't think I was missing anything.

Upon moving to Thailand from Melbourne, I was getting frustrated with all the perfect days where I could ‘almost’ kite. Or stay up wind but that was it. My local spot doubles as a paragliding spot and I’d watch them enviously in sub-10knot conditions, generating tons of safe and steady lift/power. Even in gusts and lulls.

I had the opportunity recently to try a few different Flysurfer kites and I was surprised. Apart from the logical conclusion that they are in a league of their own in sub-10 knot conditions. I was surprised at how sophisticated they where. For example, I thought that my Torch could ‘soak-up’ gust’s with its 5th line far better than any 4-line kite, tube or foil. Wrong. I’m not exactly sure how, but it just works. Better than any kite I can remember flying, even ‘easy’ kites made by major brands. I was also surprised when I started flying up wind, getting speed, power and able to generate lots of lift.

But for me the moment of truth was when I started to un-hook on the 15m Speed3 and again I was surprised. With just a little bit of de-powering I was happily un-hooking. It took a little getting used to, but in not long I was the only one riding(except for a dude on a race board) and was having a blast. Even as the wind briefly picked up to15-20knots I de-powered a little more and kept going for KGB’s and other passes till dark. Every time I crashed it and there where quite a few, I had it out of the water faster than my Torch.

The next day I got to take out the 10m Speed2 in some 15 to gusting over 25knots (briefly over 30K) stormy, choppy/wavy shifty conditions, straight after riding my 10m Torch and the best words to describe it are probably stable, powerful, easy and really forgiving in the gust’s. Again it took a few moments to get used to the differences. But once you do, it will make your inflatable seem more like a toy than a sophisticated flying ‘wing’. Again crashing, re launching, crashing, re launching, crashing with no problems. Even when I dumped it right in the face of a respectable sized wave, it would have re-launched if it hadn’t taken me ages to get to the bar in the waves and got some lines tangled around the bar(a problem with any kite while un-hooked not riding suicide in waves). Even so it washed ashore, I emptied the water out and had it back in the air in 10 minutes and dry in another 5.

The following day we got the really stormy conditions, gusting to over 30 knots and big messy waves. First my 7m Torch then time for the 6m and 8m Phycho4’s. Wow, de-power, big boosting, fast, safe and easy . It wasn’t the day for unhooking but it just made it a fun day. I put it down a few times when fronts would come through and it would get wet and windy. But after every front I launched myself, easily.

On both the Speed3’s and the Phycho4’s I was really impressed how the kites would never collapse or do anything funny whatsoever, even when they are looped. I mean paragliders do loops on their foils and trust their lives to it. You also so don’t need to work the kite as much once you get going.

Nothing is perfect and I was intimidated when I saw the pulley system, but I haven't had any issues. It just seams to stay out of the way. It could be said the chicken loop could be a bit bigger for un-hooking, but this is not really a problem. There’s also the fact that they are a bit slower than some inflatable kites. But again I have had no problem wave riding, looping or boosting bigger than usual and with much more stability when you give the kites the proper input.

You combine all of this with things like a much smaller pack size, faster set up, no pump, no leaking valves, no soft bladders in cold water, a longer life, great performance and things start to look really good. You can even unpack and launch one from the water, how cool is that?

As soon as you mention that you might want to try one, your friends might look at you a bit strange and tell you it will sink and all sorts of things, but none have flown one. I can almost promise you that riding Flysurfers, could almost double your days on the water and if you try one, you will like it. I did.

- tempo total: 3h e 40min;
- distância total: 57,6 Km;
- velocidade média: 15,6 Km/h;
- velocidade máxima:32,9 Km/h.

Uma real prova de resistencia foi feita neste inicio de setembro de 2011, os velejadores Silas e Marcelo simplesmente cercaram-se de umidade por todos os lados e vejam o que eles fizeram com a palavra Silas Albuquerque....." Nos Velejamos:

- 61,09 Km;

- Em 3h e 41min;

- Vel Max de 50,2 Km/h;

- Vel Med de 16,5 Km/h.

Detalhe importante: velejo orçando da ponte JK (passando por baixo da ponte contra o vento) até a barragem e arribando até o pontão.

Obs.: esse percurso foi feito por mim e pelo Marcelo no sábado, 03 set 2011.

Parabens Silas e Marcelo vcs deram a largada para as olimpiadas do Rio onde o kitesurf entrara na modalidade Race!

An International Kiteboarding Class Association sanctioned event

1 EVENT
1.1 The 2011 IKA Course Racing World Championships will be held from 27.06.2011 (day of registration) to 03.07.2011 (day of prize giving).

1.2 The Event includes the following Disciplines, Divisions and Grades:
Open Men
Production Boards Men
Open Women
Production Boards Women
At the same time, an event of the European Freestyle Championship series is taking place. If conditions permit, races will be scheduled in a way that competitors can attend both competitions.

1.3 The event scores 715 points towards the IKA course racing world rankings

1.4 The price money per discipline is as follows:
15000 Euro for course racing open (production boards are scored in both open and production ranking)

2 ORGANISER
2.1 The event will be organised by Brand Guides GmbH &Co KG, for and on behalf of, and under specified conditions laid down by, the International Kiteboarding Class Association (IKA).

2.2 The event is organised in conjunction with Sylt Tourismus-Service GmbH

3 VENUE
3.1 The event will be based at Westerland Beach, Sylt, Germany
3.2 Conditions to be expected – winds 8-40 knots; water conditions: flat till up to 3 m waves; water temperature 20 degree celsius; air temperature 20 degree celsius

4 RULES
4.1 This is an IKA sanctioned event governed by:

4.1.1 The ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), including the Experimental Kiteboarding Competition Rules

4.1.2 The IKA Class Rules
4.1.3 No National Authority prescriptions will apply.
4.1.4 The WSSRC Rules on WSSRC supervised events.
4.1.5 This Notice of Race (NoR) and the Sailing Instructions (SI)
4.1.6 The IKA Point System
4.1.7 The IKA Code of Conduct

4.2 If there is a conflict between the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions (SI’s), the SI’s shall take precedence.

4.3 If there is a conflict between languages, the English text will take precedence.

5 ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY
5.1 All entries shall meet the requirements of ISAF Regulation 19 - Eligibility Code.

5.2 Competitors shall be members of a National Kiteboarding Class Association, or of the relevant International Class Association, and their current year membership fees shall have been fully paid.
National Associations shall be paid up members of the IKA.

5.3 Individual Membership formalities can be completed on site for competitors without national class association.

5.4 Entry numbers are limited as follows:

5.5 The following qualifying procedures or systems apply:

5.6 Competitors shall provide the following documentation prior to completing registration formalities on
site:
 Original Entry Form
 Proof of Entry Fee payment
 Evidence of national membership
 Evidence of valid third party insurance – minimum 1 million Euro
 Proof of age
 Parental/legal Guardian Assent - for those under age of 18
 Medical Treatment Permission - for those under age of 18 or on their parents medical insurance policy

5.7 Coaches and team support personnel shall provide the following documentation prior to completing
registration formalities on site:
 Original Coach Entry Form
 Proof of Coach Entry Fee payment
 Boat Driving Licence (if applicable)
 Evidence of valid third party insurance for drivers of coach boats – minimum 5 million Euro
 Proof of ICA membership

5.8 The Registration will take place inside the riders event area from 1700 till 1900 hours

6 FEES
6.1 The Entry Fee is as follows: 120 Euro

6.2 Entry Fees shall be paid by 11th of June, 2011. Late entries incur a further 20 Euro surcharge.

6.3 The Coach Entry Fee for ICA members is 40 Euro, and 50 Euro for non ICA coaches and other team personnel.

8 ADVERTISING
8.1 ISAF Regulation 20 - Advertising Code- shall apply.

8.2 Competitors may be required to carry advertising for event sponsors – both on their kiteboards, and on a lycra vest if supplied by the organiser.

9 EQUIPMENT & EQUIPMENT INSPECTION
9.1 It is the responsibility of each competitor to ensure that his/her board and equipment conforms to its Class Rules.

9.2 Equipment checks may be made throughout the event.

9.3 Competitors shall bring their own equipment.

10 IDENTIFICATION
10.1 Every competitor is required to wear the official event lycra with his personal identification number whenever competing

11 BUOYANCY
11.1 If personal buoyancy is prescribed every competitor and support boat crewmember shall wear, above the waist, a jacket harness or vest with a minimum buoyancy of 4kg un-inflated in fresh water. The buoyancy shall be tested with a ferrous metal weight of 4kg, which shall remain supported for a minimum of 5 minutes.

11.2 Personal buoyancy is mandatory for all competitors under 18 years of age.

12 OFFICIAL NOTICE BOARD
12.1 The official notice board is located inside the riders village.

13 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
13.1 The event SIs' will be available at first skippers meeting latest, the Event Programme scheduling social events will be published on the official notice board

13.2 Alterations to the SIs shall be approved by the Class Representative.

14 COURSES
14.1 The courses will be windward/leeward, with or without offset-marks and with or without gates.

14.2 Alternate courses may be used during the regatta depending on wind and weather conditions, but will always based on windward/leeward courses.

15 SCORING
15.1 The alternative low point system of Appendix A shall apply.

16 PENALTY SYSTEM
16.1 The Sailing Instructions will specify the use of the penalty system under Appendix BB Rule 44.1, either being a scoring penalty (Rule 44.2) or a 360° turn penalty (Rule 44.3)

16.2 Sailing Instructions may alternatively specify that competitors may chose between the scoring penalty and a turn penalty

17 INTERNATIONAL JURY
17.1 An International Jury may be appointed in accordance with the RRS Appendix N.

17.2 Their decisions will be final and cannot be appealed, as specified in RRS 70.5.

18 SUPPORT BOATS
18.1 Support boats shall clearly display their national 3 letter country code in black on a white background, either on a flag of a minimum of 50cm x 40cm in size or on the cover of their outboard engine.

19 STORAGE OF EQUIPMENT
19.1 On completion of registration and continuing until the end of the regatta, when ashore (other than when launching and retrieving), all equipment shall be kept in their assigned places inside the riders village. Removal of any equipment from the regatta site may require prior written approval from the race committee. Access to equipment in the storage area during certain hours, including hours of darkness may be restricted.

20 MEDALS AND PRIZES
20.1 Medals or trophies shall be awarded to the first three competitors in each Class / Division depending on entry numbers. Categories to be awarded in each properly constituted division may be posted on
the official notice board after the close of registration.

20.2 Prizes may be awarded as follows:
a. Mens Fleet (2/3rd of total prize money)
1. 30%
2. 20%
3. 15%
4. 11%
5. 09%
6. 07%
7. 05%
8. 03%

b. Womens Fleet (1/3rd of total prize money)
1. 45%
2. 30%
3. 15%
4. 10%

21 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
21.1 Competitors take part in all races at their own risk. The LOA, IKA, ISAF or any of their officials or representatives or the sponsors or their officials or representatives are not responsible, under any
circumstances, for any damage, loss or injury either ashore or on the water either to persons or equipment, which may result.

21.2 Participation in this event, supporting events and in each race in them is at the sole discretion of the sailor and at his/her own risk. Notice is drawn to RRS 4.

22 INSURANCE
22.1 Competitors shall possess valid third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of 1 million Euro.

22.2 Coach and support boat drivers shall also have a valid third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of 5 million Euro.

23 TELEVISION AND MEDIA
23.1 In registering for the event, competitors automatically grant to the Organising Authority the right in perpetuity to make, use and show from time to time at their discretion, any motion pictures, still pictures and live, taped or filmed television and other reproduction of them, taken during the period of the event, for the said Championship as defined in the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions in which he/she participates without compensation.

24 OFFICIAL CEREMONIES
24.1 Attendance at the Opening Ceremony, Prize Giving and Closing Ceremony is mandatory.

24.2 The organiser reserves the right to refuse entry to those whose standard of attire is not commensurate with the occasion.

25 DRUG TESTING
25.1 Competitors are reminded of the ISAF rules and regulations concerning the use of banned methods and substances. Drug testing may take place during the event.

Kitesurfista atacado e morto por tubarão

Um surfista de pipa em praia Stuart morreu ontem depois que ele foi cercado e mordido por tubarão em um raro ataque.

Stephen Howard Schafer , 38, foi de cerca de um quarto de milha no mar quando foi atacado logo após quatro horas de ontem, de acordo com o Palm Beach Post.

Schafer foi descoberto por um salva-vidas flutuando cerca de 500 metros da costa e claramente em perigo. O guarda remou para ele em uma placa de resgate, e descobriu Schafer cercada por tubarões em águas vermelhas do sangue, gritando que ele tinha sido mordido por predadores.

O nadador-salvador posto Schafer sobre sua placa e remou de volta à costa.Schafer tinha marcas de mordida em sua coxa e nas nádegas. Ele morreu pouco tempo depois em um hospital próximo.Não se sabe que tipo de tubarão atacou Schafer, mas um pesquisador disse ao Post é possível que eles eram jovens brancos grandes."Eu simplesmente não consigo qualquer imagem, e muito menos um amigo que está sendo circundado por tubarões aqui em Stuart, Flórida," Teague Taylor, um amigo de longa data de Schafer, disse WPTV . "Fazer algo que ele adora fazer, fazendo algo que ele fez parte de sua vida."

Foi a primeira Florida morte por ataque de tubarão, desde 2005, eo ataque de tubarão fatalidade jamais registrado pela primeira vez no condado de Martin .

Flysurfer manda bem na neve!

A quinta temporada da Snowkite Quebec Cup começou na semana passada no Lago Champlain em Montérégie, no Canadá.
Mesmo com previsão para o fim de semana ainda pessimista, 30 pilotos inscritos apareceram sábado de manhã, no belo site de Veneza, em Quebec, Canadá, para competir pela primeira vez neste inverno no Snowkite Campeonato Quebec.

Com um segundo, terceiro e quarto lugar no fim de semana 1 do Quebec Kite Cup, pilotos dominaram a FLYSURFER rankings.
As corridas foram realizadas no sudeste e ventos é de 5 a 8 nós no sábado e no oeste variando de 6 a 8 nós. Os resultados finais, onde o 1 º lugar a Simão Gonçalves da Valleyfield que recolhe o ouro, a luta contra o primeiro lugar com Norman McGuire de Montreal (FLYSURFER) e Dominique Robichaud de Amqui (FLYSURFER) com o bronze medal!
